Division VI playoff scenarios
Posted by: MARC THALER, UnionLeader.com
This weekend marks the conclusion of the Division VI regular season. Unlike Divisions I through V, however, it’s far more difficult to list every Division VI playoff scenario.
More on that in a moment.
What we know: Inter-Lakes of Meredith (8-0 Div. VI), Winnisquam of Tilton (7-1), Newfound of Bristol (7-1) and Campbell of Litchfield (6-2) clinched postseason berths. Inter-Lakes locks up the top seed with a win over Newfound on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Now, scenarios exist for three of these teams to finish with identical records. And because all of these teams would not have played each other during the regular season (i.e. head-to-head), this division’s second tiebreaker — the football point rating system — is applied.
The point rating system (PRS) is a mathematical formula that weights wins.
Division VI is the only league where it’s possible two teams may not meet during the regular season, thus the need to make the PRS the second tiebreaker (again, when head-to-head play doesn’t do the job). This is according to multiple sources well-versed in NHIAA football tiebreakers.
Determining each playoff team’s PRS requires the need to calculate a point value for every squad the playoff team beat. And all teams have one regular-season game remaining, so it’s possible for many, many, many scenarios.
Let’s leave it at this: The playoff teams are set. Seeding is to be determined.

Leave it to the football committee to screw this one up too. 11 teams in the division, why couldn’t they play all teams in the division instead of doing a cross over game. Now we need to wait to see by points…ridiculous…D-I thru D-V is no problem to figure out…..apply the same to D-VI.

D-VI Fan- Be knowledgeable about what you are talking about! D-VI has 11 teams, an odd number! If they were to play every other team in their division only 10 of those 11 could play every week. Therefore they would have a by-week at some point and need 11 weeks to complete the regular season and 2 weeks for playoffs. The D-VI championship would be November 28th. They would have the longest season of any division in the state! What about winter sports?? Have a clue before you start bashing the football committee. They may not be perfect but your scenario is a lot worse. The crossover game prevented D-V and D-VI from having an open date in their schedule.

My Mistake…yes there are 11 teams in D-VI…What is wrong with an open date and still have a 9 game season. It was just my opinion that the point system does not work. Let’s take the top 4 teams for an example…..3 could finish at an 8-1 division record…now since Newfound did not get to play Campbell this season, because of a cross-over game, they will not get the benifit of points that Interlakes & Winnisquam got for beating campbell…if newfound beats interlakes this weekend…they still can’t be more than 3rd….were is the justification of the cross over game. The same could be said for winnisquam not able to play Newport…..again my opinion and i do think i have some knowledge of the system.Besides with the committee allowing Raymond to enter mid cycle was a bit to much…can’t say that didn’t mess things up.

I can remember just over 30 high schools playing football in the state of NH back in the late 80’s. We now have 57 by letting teams like Raymond join mid-cycle. That did mess things up by having an odd number of teams but let’s wait till after Newfound and Inter-Lakes play before we worry about three 8-1 teams. By the way does Newfound even have a home field to host a playoff game? Hope they will soon! Maybe Inter-lakes and Winnisquam should be upset Newfound didn’t have to play Campbell, they may have lost. The thought of teams playing in the playoffs that did not meet in the regular season seems very intriguing. The only way we can do that is with the points system. While we are at it lets get rid of all the mess and go to three divisions, Class L, Class I and Class M&S, or as the state will call it next year Div 1, 2, 3 and 4. D-VI fan I assume you are a Newfound fan and are upset by their scenario should they win, I understand but unless there are exactly 10 teams in a division this could possibly happen. Should be an interesting Saturday!!!
