Former Iranian Revolutionary Guard member and deputy prime minister tells NPR that Ahmadinejad orchestrated a military coup on the night of the election to stay in power.

If this is true, what does it mean for Obama and the United States? How can the USA not take the side of the democratically elected government in this case and continue to work with an illegitimate dictator, thus conferring legitimacy upon him?

The day after President Obama finally condemned the Iranian regime’s violence against its own people, Khamenei says the government must obey the rule of law.

“Everyone should respect the law. Once lawlessness becomes a norm, things will be complicated and interest of people will be undermined,” said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “We will not step an inch beyond the law: our law, our country’s law, the Islamic Republic’s law.”

There were crackdowns after that statement, but clearly Khamenei sees the need to at least ratchet down the oppression. If Obama had spoken out earlier, how many lives might have been saved?
